Bourbon experiences
A Curated Introduction to America’s Native Spirit
Perfect for executive or team offsites, advisory boards, and conference hospitality suites, DPM offers a unique in-person experience that blends storytelling, bourbon education, and a curated tasting designed to engage both enthusiasts and newcomers.
Hosted by IT industry analyst and long-time bourbon enthusiast Jason Buffington – an Executive Bourbon Steward certified by the Stave & Thief Society – this interactive session introduces guests to the history, science, and craft behind America’s native spirit while guiding them through a thoughtfully selected flight of bourbons. The experience combines approachable education with a memorable tasting designed to spark conversation long after the final pour.
What Attendees Experience
Each session begins with a short but engaging introduction to the science and history of bourbon. Guests learn how simple ingredients—corn, water, yeast, and oak—transform through fermentation, distillation, and aging into one of the world’s most distinctive spirits. Along the way, participants discover several fascinating insights and memorable trivia
The Curated Tasting
After the introduction, guests participate in a guided tasting featuring a curated flight of bourbons.
A typical experience includes five different bourbons, selected intentionally to illustrate a progression or narrative—such as exploring expressions from a single distillery family, contrasting mash bills, demonstrating the influence of aging and proof, or comparing single-barrel and small-batch expressions.
This format keeps the experience accessible for beginners while still engaging experienced bourbon drinkers.
A Take-Home Glass
Each attendee optionally receives a Glencairn whisky tasting glass — the industry-standard glass used by distilleries around the world. The glasses can be custom laser-etched with the host organization’s logo, creating a lasting keepsake that reminds guests of the experience long after the event concludes.

Why It Works for Events
The DPM bourbon tasting experience is intentionally designed to fit naturally into executive advisory boards, team retreats, or private side events at a user conference – delivered by an IT subject matter expert speaking on the main event topic — with bourbon simply serving as a memorable extra for a select group of attendees.
Rather than a lecture or a bar service, the experience becomes a shared discovery that encourages conversation and connection, with typical session formats of:
Virtual Events
with data protection & bourbon
Analyst discussion of market scenarios (15-25m)
Vendor SME discussing your solutions that align (5-15m)

Four sample bourbons in a tasting kit and an etched glass with your logo will be shipped to each attendee.
In-person Roadshows

Elevate the Bourbon Experience
For groups that want to go beyond a traditional tasting, the principal analyst from Data Protection Matters is a certified Executive Bourbon Steward and is authorized to deliver the introductory course from the Stave & Thief Society or facilitate an advanced tasting course. Consider for either marquis customers or an internal team retreat.
The session adds a structured and engaging dimension to the evening, giving guests a deeper appreciation for bourbon while creating a memorable shared experience.
